As you type and choose Roots for each of your members, Family Tree Builder will Automatically Join them. To load the sample data on the grid, click the ‘Sample Trees’ button.
To select a ‘Root’ for a member, click on the ‘SELECT’ button in each row to launch the root select popover. To choose a root click on the desired name from the member list. Please note that you can ONLY type on the yellow cells, All white (Parent) cells can only be filled with the ‘SELECT’ button. Once the root is selected, the change is reflected instantly on the Family Tree.
For Divorced or remarried couples, click on the “SELECT” button and choose the “Divorced or Remarried” option, then set the previous relationship as the root for this member. This relationship will be illustrated by a dotted line but can be changed to solid from the Line option.
Taking notes about your family research and discoveries is easy, simply click on the “SELECT” button and enter your notes in the space provided. The font style that you select on the toolbar is the same font that will be applied to your note editor. To zoom in, click on the zoom button on the top right corner to display an enlarged preview of the notes entered as shown in the screen below.
To create a line break, simply type the opening parenthesis sign ‘(‘ where you wish to break the line. All text after the opening parenthesis ‘(‘ will be pushed to the next line. If the text gets hidden, consider changing the font or Leaf size.
To format Leaves, Use the Leaf options available in the toolbar. You can change the font family, font size & Leaf size.
To Customize colors, simply click on the color picker icon next to the item you want to customize. If you wish to use a single color for all your Leaves, simply change the Style from Multi-Color to Single Color on the toolbar. Only the top level element color picker can be used when using the Single Color Style. To revert back, simply toggle between the two options. To customize the Leaf text color, join line, background & Chart Title, simply click on the color swatches on the toolbar.
To Export your Family Tree in PDF or PNG format, Click on the Export icon in the toolbar. You can also use this option to Export your Family Tree Data in CSV format. This can also be achieved from the “File >Export Data” option. The export feature gives you the flexibility to export your data and make mass edits using any spreadsheet application and then re-import it back to the App. Starting version 1.4, CSV files can be exported and imported with root relationships, however we recommend that you be cautious when altering any root values in your CSV files as this may make the relationships overlap and halt the rendering process within the App.
Family Tree Builder allows you to Save your family trees for future use or edits. To Save a tree simply click on File > Save. To Save As, use the File>Save As Option
Use Edit > Copy Chart in the top menu to move your Chart to the clipboard. The above screen is an example of a copy & paste in Pages App. You can copy and paste Family Trees in Pages, Keynote, Numbers & in other Mac applications.
You can also use the Export Options to generate a PNG image or PDF document that you easily open from other apps as shown below.
To Email or Share your Family Tree, click on the ‘Share’ button on the toolbar or Click on the File > Share option from the top menu. Select the desired format from the Share popover. This can be either PDF or PNG format.
If your Family Tree is too wide, or long, it may not display fully on the Family Tree Window, to display hidden items, simply resize your window if using an iMac by dragging the edges of the Family Tree Window to the right & bottom or scroll to the right, left & bottom to expose the hidden items. You can also click on the ‘Full Screen Zoom’ button to utilize your entire screen. If on fullscreen mode and some items are still hidden, use the same scrolling principles as described before.
To import a CSV file, Click on the “Import” button. You must use the provided template for your data to import correctly. Failing to use the provided template will make your import to fail. You must enter the column headers as provided in the template in row 1 of your CSV file as shown in the screenshot below. To download the import template click on the “Import” and choose the “Download Template” option. Ver 1.4 and higher allows you to import data with root values. It’s recommended you use the “SELECT” button to create relationships between the elements, but if already created, you can export your data, make edits with a spreadsheet application & then import it back with all your root relationships.
Updating root values in the CSV is OK as long as it doesn’t overlap. Setting root values incorrectly in the CSV will make your family tree not to render when imported back. If this happens to you, simply revert the root values if re-importing a file that was already created with Family Tree Builder or clear the root column in the CSV and after import, set the root values with the “SELECT” button.
Starting version 1.4 and higher, you can also include notes for each of your leaves in the CSV import. Due to space limitations, these notes won’t show up in the Tree, but can be downloaded in CSV format.

To print your Family Tree, Click on the ‘Print’ Icon on the toolbar or Click on File > Print from the top menu. Family Tree Builder will automatically determine your paper size and will auto zoom the chart to fit. If your chart is too wide or tall, it may not display clearly in the standard size A4 paper, so be sure to use a much bigger pager size that can be equivalent to the size of your Family Tree. If you wish to print the Chart with a different Application, you can simply export it in PDF or PNG image format.
