Importing CSV data

Import CSV data

Screen Shot 2016-08-14 at 5.32.10 PM

To import a CSV file, Click on the “Import” button. You must use  the  provided template  for your data to import correctly. Failing to use the provided template will make your import to fail. You  must enter the column headers as provided in the template in row 1 of your CSV file as shown in the screenshot below.  To download the import template click on the  “Import” and choose the  “Download Template” option. Ver 1.4 and higher allows you to import data with root values. It’s recommended you use the “SELECT” button to create relationships between the elements, but if already created, you can export your data, make edits with a spreadsheet application & then import it back with all your root relationships.

Updating root values in the CSV is OK as long as it doesn’t overlap.  Setting root values incorrectly in the CSV will make your family tree not to render when imported back. If this happens to you, simply revert the root values if re-importing a file that was already created with Family Tree Builder or clear the root column in the CSV and after import, set the root values with the “SELECT” button.

Starting version 1.4 and higher, you can also include notes for each of your leaves in the CSV import. Due to space limitations, these notes won’t show up in the Tree, but can be downloaded in CSV format.
